SKILLS PROGRAMME: INTRODUCTION TO AQUAPONICS

This comprehensive NQF Level 1 skills programme combines key unit standards from Plant Production and Chemical Operations to equip learners with practical, entry-level skills in sustainable crop production, irrigation, hydroponics, and basic agricultural business principles.
Throughout the programme, emphasis is placed on practical, workplace-relevant learning that blends theoretical knowledge with real-life applications. Learners will work in simulated and live agricultural environments, gaining experience in hydroponic and aquaponic systems, irrigation maintenance, plant care, and safe tool handling. Environmental awareness is embedded in all activities, with a focus on conserving resources, preventing pollution, and maintaining workplace safety. By the end of the training, learners will have developed a well-rounded skill set enabling them to operate confidently in both traditional and modern farming systems.
This skills programme not only supports personal career development but also contributes to broader agricultural transformation goals by empowering new entrants with practical competencies to engage in profitable, sustainable primary production.
NQF Level 1
The programme covers nine unit standards, including Select, Use and Care for Hand Tools and Basic Equipment and Infrastructure (116167), ensuring learners can work safely and efficiently with essential agricultural tools to construct Aquaponics Systems. Maintain Basic Water Quality (116168) and Operate and Maintain Irrigation Systems (116202) provide foundational skills in water management, a critical component for both soil-based and soilless systems. Learners are introduced to Perform Basic Routine Operations in a Defined Hydroponic Context (116072), enabling them to work in modern farming systems, and Identify and Select Pipes, Fittings, and Valves (244104), ensuring competence in handling and maintaining infrastructure essential for irrigation and hydroponics.
The programme extends to Plant the Crop Under Supervision (116200) and Manipulate Plants (116203), giving learners hands-on experience in planting, training, and managing crop growth to optimise yields. Apply Basic Agricultural Enterprise Selection Principles (116158) introduces learners to decision-making processes in agricultural business planning, while Identify the Need for Capital and Record Income and Costs (116159) equips them with basic financial literacy, ensuring they can monitor and record economic activities in a small-scale agricultural setting. The combination of these unit standards ensures that graduates can contribute meaningfully to farm operations, manage small production units, and understand the core requirements for successful and sustainable farming.
